Why a saddle design?
The Bambach Saddle Seat was invented by Mary Gale, an occupational therapist and lifelong horseback rider. While incorporating horseback riding into her treatment plans, she made an intriguing observation: patients who required extra support to sit in a regular chair could sit comfortably and unsupported on horseback.
Over time, Mary became convinced that the saddle posture, which allows the spine to maintain its natural “S” shape, was far healthier than traditional seating. Her belief was later supported by research, which confirmed that ordinary chairs force the spine into an unnatural “C” shape, placing stress on the spinal discs and surrounding muscles.
Determined to bring this ergonomic breakthrough to everyday seating, Mary collaborated with an occupational therapist, physiotherapist, and engineer to develop the first Bambach Saddle Seat in 1988.
Configure your Bambach in 4 easy steps
Every Bambach can be configured around the user, work environment, and preferred setup. Choose your seat, working height, upholstery, and accessories.
1. Choose your seat and backrest
Choose Classic Small (13"), Classic (15"), or Classic Plus (17"). Then select no backrest, ErgoBack, or Standard Back where compatible. The Classic Small is available with ErgoBack only.
2. Choose your height and casters
Select a Short, Medium, or Tall cylinder based on your height and workstation, then choose casters for hard or carpeted floors. A Tall cylinder is typically recommended when using a foot ring.
3. Choose your upholstery
A Bambach Saddle Seat goes with any decor. The easy clean vinyl is available in six standard colors. Or choose the rich look and feel of Ultra-Leather. Special colors available upon request.
4. Add your accessories
Complete your setup with a Belly Bar arm support, 18" foot ring, or foot-operated height adjuster to suit the way you work.

The Bambach vs. Conventional Seating
With so many seats labeled “ergonomic,” how do you separate the imitators from the innovators? Look at what they do, not what they say.
Conventional flat seating—by its very design—prevents the pelvis from supporting your spine and keeping your upper body in proper alignment. Additionally, flat chairs tend to bend your hips at 90 degrees to your spine, causing it to deform into a compressed “C” shape. This unnatural curvature increases stress on the discs, which can lead to pain, with the 4th and 5th lumbar discs being the “classic” trouble spots.
The Bambach Saddle Seat is radically different in its design. Unlike conventional flat seating, the Bambach places the pelvis beneath the spine, enabling it to return to its natural “S” curve. This means your lumbar discs aren’t put under pressure, helping to avoid back pain and related problems.
Plus, the Bambach keeps your hips at the most ergonomic angle of 45 degrees, allowing for back and thigh muscles to be at their most relaxed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a Bambach different from a regular chair?
The contoured saddle seat encourages your pelvis to sit more upright and lets your thighs angle downward. This creates a more open hip angle and can make it easier to maintain a natural spinal curve while moving closer to your work. The best fit still depends on your body and workstation.
Which Bambach seat size should I choose?
There are three seat sizes: Classic Small (13 inches), Classic (15 inches), and Classic Plus (17 inches). Make sure to check the full measurements and available configurations before ordering.
Can I try a Bambach before deciding to keep it?
Yes! We offer a 30 day trial period. If you see that it's not a good fit for you, you can always return it.
How do I choose the right cylinder height?
Hager’s starting guide suggests a short cylinder for users 5′2″ and under, medium for 5′3″ to 6′, and tall for 6′1″ and over. Your workstation height matters too. A tall cylinder is typically recommended when using a foot ring, even if you would otherwise choose a shorter cylinder.
